About Essential Oils
How to use Essential Oils
Aromatically - Topically - Internally
When I say Essential oils can be taken Internally, I am speaking only for doTERRA Essential Oils. I only feel 100% comfortable putting doTERRA essential oils into my body because I know without a doubt in my mind that they are PURE. I use these oils with confidence that they are improving my overall health.
Essential oils have a powerful effect when used in an aromatic application. As soon as you smell an essential oil it is quickly absorbed by the smell receptors, then passes through the olfactory nerve. Our smell receptors are directly linked to the Limbic System which is the part of the brain that supports functions including smell, emotions, behavior and memory. So just simply smelling essential oils can trigger very powerful physiologic, mental and emotional responses.
Diffusing essential oils in a diffuser is the most common way of using essential oils aromatically. We may diffuse Lavender, Petitgrain or Vetiver for calming effects before bedtime or diffuse citrus and mints in the morning for a nice ‘wake me up’ effect. Some essential oils are calming, while others can be uplifting.
Other Aromatic Uses:
Put a couple drops in the palm of your hand. Cup it around nose and mouth and inhale deeply.
Put a couple drops on dryer balls when doing laundry
Apply oil to a cotton ball and place it in the vacuum.
Apply oil to a cotton ball and place it in your car air vents
Put oils in your DIY all purpose cleaner
Make a room spray, linen spray, bathroom spray with essential oils
Topical application is a very effective method for applying essential oils. The essential oils can easily penetrate the skin and absorb quickly. It only takes 22 seconds for the molecules to reach the brain, 2 minutes for the essential oil to be found in the bloodstream and only 20 minutes for the essential oil to reach every single cell in your entire body! They work FAST. A couple ways to increase absorption even quicker would be lightly massaging the oil into the desired area to increase blood flow. Also adding a carrier oil to moisturize the skin will help increase absorption as well as slow the evaporation of the oil.
A few things to keep in mind are always use a carrier oil such as Fractionated Coconut oil to dilute an essential oil before putting on a baby or someone with sensitive skin. Also dilute oils when you are trying them for the first time just in case you do have a skin sensitivity. Lastly always dilute ‘hot’ oils such as Clove, Thyme, Cinnamon, Cassia and Oregano.
One last thing it is always advisable to use several small doses throughout the day rather than a single large dose. Always start with the lowest dose around 1-2 drops. You can repeat a topical dose every 2 - 6 hours or as needed depending on the individuals size, age and overall health status.

Forehead and temples

Arms and Wrists
Legs and bottom of feet

Add essential oils to your skin care routine

Citrus Essential Oils
If you are going to be outside do not wear these oils in areas that will see the sun. If you are going outside but still want want to apply the essential oil, put it on the bottoms of your feet, or anywhere that will be covered with clothing. This includes tanning beds! Citrus oils are photosensitive and will burn your skin if you wear them in the sun or in a tanning bed.
Internal use of essential oils is a very safe and effective method of application because our bodies recognize it. Essential Oils are natural and our bodies recognize that and will always accept essential oils and will always know exactly what to do with them. When essential oils are in their concentrated form they can be used as dietary supplements for more targeted and potent health benefits.
When ingested, essential oils almost immediately enter the bloodstream and go throughout the entire body. They are lipid soluble and are easily transported through all of our organs including our brain. After being metabolized by the liver and other organs they are then excreted just like anything else we would consume. Although it is highly unlikely to ‘overdose’ on essential oils. There is an appropriate way to use them and ingest them.
Just like anything you put into your body, too much of something can not be good for you. Using 1-2 drops every 4-6 hours or when needed, would be ideal. The body is only equipped to handle appropriate doses of essential oils. Proper dosing according to labeling recommendations and other professional guidelines should be strictly followed to avoid toxicity.
Internal Application Tips
Replace fresh or dried herbs and spices with essential oils when cooking or baking.
Remember that essential oils are much more potent than dried or fresh herbs and spices, so start with a very small amount. (In my experience usually 1 drop is plenty.)
For more potent oils, dip the end of a clean toothpick into the oil and then add to the food, rather than drops. (Sometimes just 1 drop can be too strong in a dish)
You can add essential oils to water, smoothies, milk, tea, or other drinks
Take essential oils internally in a veggie capsule or add to a small amount of applesauce or yogurt
Essential Oil Shot- If you do not enjoy the taste of a couple oils but want to take them internally for the benefits. Put 1-2 drops of each oil you are wanting in about an 1 oz of water and take it like shot.
WHY doTERRA ESSENTIAL OILS?
PURE - POTENT - EFFECTIVE
When you choose doTERRA, you are choosing essential oils gently and carefully distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested at the perfect moment by experienced growers from around the world for ideal extract composition and efficacy. Each doTERRA essential oil is also carefully and thoroughly tested using the strict CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® quality protocol. Experienced essential oil users will immediately recognize the superior quality standard for naturally safe, purely effective therapeutic-grade doTERRA essential oils.
The purity of an essential oil is its most important characteristic. An essential oil that isn’t pure means you run the risk of putting germs, heavy metals, or adulterants onto or into your body, which can provoke irritation, adverse effects, or even sickness. Without an accepted standard for essential oil quality, doTERRA created its own testing process, calling it CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®. The CPTG process certifies that there are no added fillers, synthetic ingredients, or harmful contaminants in their essential oils that would reduce their efficacy. doTERRA even goes a step further, putting all their products and the packaging through a battery of tests to ensure a long and effective shelf-life. This protocol ensures potency, purity, and consistency batch to batch.
In addition to supplying the highest quality essential oils doTERRA is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of farmers, harvesters, and distillers who contribute to doTERRA’s oil production.
With over 100 essential oils in its product line, doTERRA sources its oils from over 40 countries —more than half of which could be considered developing countries. To ensure that small scale farmers and harvesters in disadvantaged areas are treated ethically, doTERRA has introduced an initiative called Co-Impact Sourcing.
Co-Impact Sourcing is an initiative that seeks to develop long-term, mutually beneficial supplier partnerships while creating sustainable jobs and providing reliable income in underdeveloped areas. doTERRA is committed to the ethical treatment of its suppliers by providing on-time payments at fair prices. Growers and harvesters are encouraged to form cooperative groups to share collective benefits and bargaining power while improving skills and capacity.
Additionally, the doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation® helps support development projects in sourcing communities. Projects include schools, health clinics, improved infrastructure and clean water systems.
